16 DAY 030
★ 57.44. BELATED BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS, ROUND #2
The second round of birthday celebration consisted of a birthday dinner at Saigon Market, a Vietnamese restaurant in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, and some swaying back and forth, a.k.a. dancing, at a nightclub in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. Two of my friends surprised me with birthday presents. I received a birthday card, a deck of "lesson" cards, a large (1.45 oz) Hershey's Kisses chocolate, and a hand-decorated, chocolate-covered wafer pie. We had originally planned to attend a party on 11th Avenue and 48th Street after dinner. However, the party was unexpectedly cancelled at the last minute. That was when we made our way to Hell's Kitchen.
80. Left a 50% tip for the barber (14/1,000,000)
After a quick shower, I crawled back to bed. Before falling asleep, I fantasized.
16 DAY 029
★ 57.44. BELATED BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS, ROUND #1
The first round of birthday celebration consisted of a dinner and a movie. An old co-worker and I grabbed dinner at Souen, an organic macrobiotic restaurant in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Following our dinner, we saw The Revenant at a nearby theater.
16 DAY 028
16 DAY 027
1 / 9 / 12. in and out
I was still overwhelmed from the day before. I was even more overwhelmed when I saw your figure. At the same time, I did not care, from the disorientation. I left my seat, and made my way to you. I had prepared in my head a topic for conversation. Then, someone made it to you before me. The two of you conversed. I stood by the coffee maker, and waited for the coffee to brew. I left where you were with my coffee once the coffee was done brewing. Then, you left, I was hit with another wave of emptiness.
★ attended our office's hot cocoa gathering + The doctor did not call today + the lady at the chinese restaurant gave me extra food
Our office hosted a hot cocoa gathering today.
The doctor did not call.
The older lady at the Chinese restaurant packaged extra food for me this evening, food that did not pay for. She snuck in my takeout an egg roll and a larger container of soup. There is also a younger lady at the Chinese restaurant, who was not there today, who frequently bags additional, free food items with my order. But the gesture was a first from the older lady.

16 DAY 026
16 DAY 025
★ called the doctor for an appointment + my mom planted an idea in my head
I walked pass the building entrance to the plaza area at the back. I called the doctor to make the long due appointment. I made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon, the earliest time the doctor is available to see me. My emotions were mixed. Terrified. Mostly terrified.
My mom called in the evening to discuss with me a letter that she had received at home regarding my younger brother. I told her about my upcoming appointment. Health and safety come first, she said. I proceeded to complain to her about my current living situation, changing the topic of the conversation. Then, she planted an idea in my head.

16 DAY 024
18 / 46. Walked to the gym + Worked out + walked home
Walking into the aftermath of Jonas, the snowstorm, in my not-waterproofed sneakers was a bad idea. Proceed to walk to the gym in the aftermath of Jonas in my not-waterproofed sneakers was a really bad idea.
So I skipped and I leaped. But I missed a few crucial landings. My feet was frozen from the icy-cold, muddy water that had seeped into my shoes when I missed my landings. I had to take my shoes and socks off to dry when I arrived at the gym.
I went about my usual routine at the gym.
The return trip was worse. I missed a few more crucial landings. By the time I reached home, my feet was completely numb from the invaded ice.

★ 57.44. Tried out the cabbage and pork dumpling at a nearby chinese restaurant
Chinatown dumplings had not been as good as Flushing dumplings. The key difference between the dumplings from the two areas is that most dumpling places in Chinatown, at least the few restaurants that I had checked out, do not hand-make the dumpling shell. While the filling of a dumpling makes or breaks the dumpling - this sounds a little dramatic, but it is true - a perfect shell serves as the icing on the cake.
I ordered a serving of the cabbage and pork dumplings from a restaurant downstairs tonight. I was immediately impressed by the look of the dumplings. I could just tell from the look of the dumplings that the shell is hand-made. The filling was delicious as well. I particularly enjoyed their use of fatty pork. I am hoping to blog the dish in greater detail once the blog is up and running.

16 DAY 023
★ 57.44. walked across the manhattan bridge in a blizzard
Last weekend, Mother Nature gifted New York City with a preview for what is to come today. Hail and snow mercilessly bombarded the Big Apple this Saturday.
After breakfast, I walked by the nearby laundromat to my apartment to see if it is opening for business. The laundromat was not opening for business. Instead of heading home, I walked across the Manhattan Bridge to DUMBO, Brooklyn in the blitzing blizzard. The snow storm picked up its power while I was making my way across the Manhattan Bridge. There were periods of complete white-out.
I roamed the frozen streets of DUMBO, lingered at popular tourist spots to take photos. From DUMBO, I took the train home.

16 DAY 022
16 DAY 021
18 / 46. Walked to the gym + worked out + walked home
I spent too much time counting money. I left the apartment later than usual. After an extraordinarily short workout, I walked home.
16 DAY 020
1 / 9 / 12. I am not holding my breath
I am not holding my breath. I am not storing my hope on the ceiling.
What it is is what it is is what it is.
My peripheral vision caught you looking over then looking away.
I saw a reflection in the window. I turned around to look. There you were, looking directly at me.
What it is is what it is is what it is is nothing more.

★ Called the doctor + bought a new pair of pants from old navy
Today was a slow day. I took advantage of the slow day to call the doctor. I am happy that I am finally doing something about my situation. I am hoping to schedule an appointment with a doctor in the coming days.
After work, I stopped by the nearby H&M and Old Navy stores to shop for pants. I purchased a pair of maroon, skinny chinos from Old Navy.

16 DAY 019
18 / 46. Walked to the gym + worked out + walked home
The title said it all.
Without being obvious, I glanced over to peek at the hidden face underneath the baseball cap. The subject took notice, looking pass me, into nothing.

57.44. Tried out a new restaurant, super taste restaurant, in chinatown, manhattan
The lady stationed at the front desk was in a verbal fight with the older lady, who was wrapping dumplings by the front desk. From the look of the situation, I deducted that the lady stationed at the front desk was the daughter, and the older lady was the mom. The younger lady was not friendly when she took my order.
I ordered the usual, hand-pulled noodle with dumplings and egg. The order took a while to make. It made sense. Dumpling typically take a long time to cook.
There were two young, Chinese women sitting to the left of me, eating and chatting away. Three young men walked into the restaurant to join a fourth men, who had been waiting at a table behind the two Chinese girls. Of the four men, there was an Asian man. There was a needy Asian man. My peripheral vision caught the man walking up to the counter three or four times within the duration of less than five minutes making more than too many irritating requests.
The compact restaurant was overfilled with customers by the time I left. The crowded atmosphere was overwhelming, boldly contrasts my loneliness, as I stepped back into the numbing cold.

16 DAY 018
18 / 46. walked home from work
Today was freezing. I was significantly underdressed for the weather. I walked home from work along 6th Avenue, above the F line. As soon as I made my 10,000 steps, I ducked inside the nearest subway station, which happened to be the West 4th Station.
16 DAY 017
FIRST SNOW OF THE WINTER
18 / 46. went to breakfast + walked to the gym + worked out + walked home
I had a lot of taros today. For breakfast, I had two taro cakes, and a large bowl of Chinese noodle in duck and taro soup. Initially, I had ordered a bowl of Chinese noodle in duck soup, one of my favorite dishes from the restaurant. However, the chef made a mistake with my order, and I did not want to create trouble by asking the chef to remake the dish. I love taro, but that was a lot of taro for one morning.
After breakfast, I walked to the gym, stopping by a Walgreens along the way to pick up a bag of floss. I went about my usual routine at the gym. After a short session, I walked home in the first snow of the winter.

I went and got myself a bowl of hand-pulled noodle.
Tip was not required at the hand-pulled noodle place, however, I left a tip anyway.

I suggested to have dinner at another location. New York City is so vast, why do we always eat at the same place. I ordered the same ginger salmon dish. It was delicious.

18 / 46. Walked home from work
Today's weather was below freezing temperature. I was concerned that it would be too cold for me to walk home after work this evening. However, the sub-freezing temperature turned out to be bearable without the added wind chill. This was my second time walking home from work in an effort to walk at minimum 10,000 steps a day.
80. Gave up my seat on the subway for an elderly woman
I swiftly snatched a newly available seat. An elderly woman entered the train. I asked if she would like a seat. She accepted my offer. I gave up my seat for the elderly woman.

16 DAY 012
18 / 46 / 57.44. Walked home from work
I set a goal for the new year to walk at minimum 10,000 steps a day. I was not planning to go on a run or to go to the gym after work today. To make sure I get in my 10,000 steps a day, I decided to walk home. Nothing out of the ordinary happened on my walk home.
16 DAY 011
18 / 46. walked to gym + worked out + walked home
I was exhausted, but I really should go to the gym. So, I did. I walked to the gym. I worked out. I walked home.
80. gave direction to a man at the train station
"Does this train go to Manhattan?"
An A train pulled up to the station.
"Well, we are in Manhattan."
"42nd Street, I mean."
"Yes."

80. gave direction to a teenager looking for the delancey Street station on the f line
A teenager came up to me asking for direction to the Delancey Street station on the F line. I pointed the boy to the nearest subway station from where we were, the East Broadway station, also on the F line.
"The East Broadway station is right there. Delancey Street is one station from East Broadway."
"The East Broadway station is right there. Delancey Street is one station from East Broadway."
"No. How do I get there by foot?"
"Walk down East Broadway. Then, make a left."
"Walk down this away. Make a left." I mumbled absentedmindedly. A frentic woman had interruped my speech.
"So walk down that way and make a left."
"I pointed in the general direction of the East Broaday station. Walk down this street. Make a left."
The boy seemed to undersntad my direction and made his way down east Broady.

16 DAY 010
★ It's a match!
It's a match!
Oh man, it's a match!
Making a decision based on minimal information, this shallow process of selection, in addition to the lack of a pass option, was making me anxious. I felt like an utter ass going about the motion. Is it not insane how a seemingly harmless and supposedly fun program could make a person feel this way?

18 / 46. went a run along east river promenade
I had not been running as frequent lately as I used to.

57.44. Went out to dinner with a group of friends at Cafeteria in Chelsea, manhattan.
It's dinner time. I better prepared myself for today's dinner by not eating prior. The salmon was delicious, though the serving was unfulfilling Food aside, there were a lot sharing emotions of the dinner table. Emotions aside, we talked about buying the lottery. |
16 DAY 008
16 DAY 007
80. instructed a man on how to use the elevator (12/1,000,000)
I stepped into the elevator. A man unsurely followed me into the elevator.
Recognizing his unconfident expression, I pointed to a screen across from the elevator.
"You select the button of the floor you would like to go to. It will tell you which elevator to take." I explained to the man.
The man hurriedly exited the elevator, and selected "24" from the screen.
"Elevator 6. This is elevator 6. You are trying to get rid of me." He joked as he stepped back into the elevator.

80. left a 50% tip for the barber (11/1,000,000)
I counted the days since my last haircut. It had been two weeks. I was irritated by my unmanageable hair. I decided to shave off all of my hair.
"One on the top. Zero on the side." I told the barber.
The barber was done with his job in less than five minutes. I left the barber an usual 50% tip before headed out the door.

16 DAY 006
18 / 46. Went to the gym before going home
I contemplated for a second to whether or not to go straight to the gym from work. I had left my lock home. Ultimately, I decided that making a detour home first was not time efficient.
When I arrived at the gym, I left my belongings in a surveilled locker outside of the locker room. I went about my usual routine at the gym, and left after a short session.

16 DAY 004
18 / 46. ran into an old co-worker at the gym today
El Niño came and left. Winter had finally dawned on New York City.
I walked to the gym in the freezing cold. At the gym, I went about my usual routine. I also ran into an old co-worker last night at the gym. Still feeling a little lightheaded from the fever from the day before, I was not paying attention while we conversed. I thought he had said that he works at 33rd street and 8th street. At the minute, I did not translate the address that he provided to One Penn Plaza, the building across from where Iwork. We chatted briefly. I finished my short session and walked home.
